that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
When we complain that we don’t hear from God, frequently it is because we are not listening.
As humans, we build up stuff around us. We become insulated and make ourselves busy. This busyness can take the form of hobbies, sports, work, toys (gadgets, games, computers, cars, etc.) or any number of other distractions. All of these things can separate us from direct communication with God. He is still there, but we have made it difficult to hear Him over the noise in our lives.
You know what your particular version of stuff is. Do you play any and every sport, consumed with competition to the exclusion of God? Do you immerse yourself in video games during your downtime and as a result spend none of your free time in spiritual pursuits?
There are obviously a lot of truly sinful things that we can build around ourselves as well. I am simply focusing here on those activities that we usually view as harmless. In small quantities, they are harmless. Problems occur when these activities are no longer simply pastimes, but become a way of life.
Want a simple test? How much of your time is invested in meaningless activities or pursuits compared to your pursuit of God’s desires? I’m not intending to say that you need to be in prayer or reading scripture as much as you watch TV or play a game. Pursuit of God’s desires is not a scale that is to be balanced. What I am saying is that your mind should be turned towards His desires first.
Ask God to help you focus clearly on Him and His desires.
Do you spend your time in selfish pursuits or are you focused on God first? When you take time to relax and unwind, do your activities glorify God? Is excessive time spent in leisure activities?
This week create a journal of your daily activities that is detailed. Write down anything that you spend more than 15 minutes doing. At the end of the week bring this list with you as you go to the Lord in prayer and ask for Him to convict you of any activities that you need to reduce.
