“So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”
1 Corinthians 10:12-13
The first punch the enemy will throw at us during the good fight is temptation. Satan fires this punch hard and fast in an attempt to end the fight in the first round. Sin makes us drop our hands during the fight and temptation is the feint he uses to deceive us.
How do we counter-punch temptation?
In James 4, we are told exactly how to counter the punches of temptation. In verses 7 and 8, we are told to draw near to God and resist the devil. Moreover, when we are knocked down, be quick to get back to our feet and cleanse our hands through repentance!
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double–minded” (James 4:7-8).
As our relationship gets stronger with our heavenly Father, we begin to understand his love for us. As we come to know how much He loves us, our love for Him will grow naturally, and our good fighting style we will begin to look like his. If we continue to draw near to God and resist the devil, he will flee.
Remember, it is called a fight for a reason. However, we fight from victory, not for victory. Keep Fighting!
